Opening expo: There must be some way out of here

There must be some way out of here
Upon entering, never look back. Repeatedly resist all temptation to see what is behind you, and assume when moving that you are being watched, (as you are always under surveillance). Don’t alter the pace of your walking. Draw your escape. There’s always some way out of here.
There must be some way out of here is a duo exhibition by Leonie Kuipers and Bernardo Zanotta. For the past year, the two artists have been exploring different performative methodologies drawn from the world of espionage and spy fiction. Their collaborative research departed from a conceptual interest in the theatrical technologies used by spies, such as the perception of environmental elements and events with respect to their time and space (situational awareness) as well as forms of secretive information exchange known as ‘brush passes’. Thinking of different performances as ‘missions,’ the artists have produced a series of video works that are presented in this exhibition. Their work also expands the spy gaze to the context of the exhibition, by positioning the viewer in the space in an informed way. Who watches and who is being watched? Is the spectator a voyeur of the work, or is it the other way around? Combining their different disciplines, these questions are addressed by the two artists in both absurd and analytical ways.
